Seeking your support to represent Kitchissippi Ward on City Council.

Our Community

Kitchissippi, meaning "the Great River", is the former Ojibway name for the Ottawa River. The name was given to the Kitchissippi Lookout, overlooking the Ottawa River, and was adopted for the city council ward in the area when the new city of Ottawa was formed in 2001.  The area is steeped in history and is one of Ottawa's fastest growing and most vibrant areas with a diverse population of almost 37,000 people.

Kitchissippi is home to a number of unique communities.  Each has its own individual challenges but also may share issues with residents in the other communities in Ottawa.  Community associations are vital in improving our neighbourhoods and ultimately our city as a whole.

Westboro Beach is located in the larger geographic neighbourhood of Westboro.  The Westboro Beach community is unique in that it is located adjacent to the Ottawa River, is the site of a public access point to the River and is bounded to the South by the City’s transitway. In fact, Westboro Beach includes several transportation corridors: the transitway, the Trans Canada Trail, the Ottawa River Parkway, the NCC recreational pathway system and the Ottawa River. Westboro Beach is an active living community and greatly values greenspaces.

Newspapers:

The Kitchissippi Times

The Kitchissippi Times is Kitchissippi's locally owned and operated community newspaper. Filled with colourful and vibrant editorial and photography, the Kitchissippi Times covers and celebrates the interesting people and events of this dynamic neighbourhood. The Kitchissippi Times is delivered 20 times a year to homes in the area bounded by the Ottawa River in the North, Carling Avenue in the South, the O-Train tracks in the East and Woodroffe in the West.

Newswest

Since 1978, Newswest has kept the residents of Ottawa west informed about what's happening in their neighbourhood. Newswest survives by being able to get into the nooks and crannies of the community to celebrate the people, the events and the institutions that contribute to the vibrancy of the area.

Newswest is written by the community for the community which enables it to provide an unique perspective on life in the Kitchissippi area. A majority of Newswest articles are written by volunteer writers wishing to highlight an issue, a person or an event that they feel is of interest. Volunteer groups are also encouraged to use the pages of Newswest as a pipeline to the broader community to make readers aware of events and issues that escape the notice of the professional media.

Newswest covers the neighbourhoods of Mechanicsville, Hintonburg, Champlain Park, West Wellington, Hampton Park, Westboro Beach, Westboro, Highland Park, McKellar Park, Carlingwood and Civic Hospital.  Over 16,000 copies of Newswest are distributed free-of-charge 12 times a year to homes and retail locations in the Kitchissippi area.
